the city escape.
Even though I love the perks of living in a city like Vienna, I also love leaving the city behind every once in a while. During summer, Mike and I like to explore the countryside around Vienna. Wachau, Kremstal, Burgenland, … all of those areas that are within an hour’s drive are beyond beautiful and known wine regions with have great food to be discovered. Last night we met up with friends by the Neusiedler See for dinner at the Heuriger Schwein und Wein in Purbach (translates to “pig and wine”). Usually, Heurigen restaurants are a place where a local winemaker serves his new wine under a special license and rather simple food that involves lots of meat and unhealthy options.
Well, Schwein und Wein is different – even though the name would probably suggest otherwise. With peach-tomato salads, beetroot topped with goat yogurt, tofu, smoked fig with feta and mint or grilled eggplant as alternatives to the classic Schweinsbraten on the menu, it is now my favorite Heuriger for sure! We literally ordered everything on the menu and shared all the dishes family style between the 4 of us. The atmosphere feels more like being invited over to a friend’s house for dinner than being at a restaurant and even though the setting is rather simple, it is warm and welcoming. We didn’t get a table on the terrace out back, but even the folding tables in front of the house are beautiful with the perfect sunlight and right company! For the first time in a while, I actually had my camera with me for one of our meals and decided to share our city escape with you today. I hope you all had an amazing, sunny weekend and wishing you an extra happy Monday!
