How to make black & blue work together

How to make black & blue work together

Not only once, have Mike and I had a “discussion” about whether black and blue work together or not. If you ask me, it is a question that simply doesn’t come with a clear yes/no answer. There are way too many factors that play a roll. First and foremost, the shade of blue, the material of the pieces and the season. I have always found Mike’s blue suede suit to look good with black shoes in Winter, in Summer I prefer his regular blue suit with cognac brown loafers. Today, however, it is my turn to style black and blue together.

When I originally ordered my dark blue long coat, I was fully convinced that it was black. So the first instinct upon opening the package last Winter was disappointment. Luckily it didn’t last long because I quickly realized that blue actually suits me a bit better than black. In the past, I mostly styled the oversized dark blue coat with denim and lighter shades of blue or beige. Recently, I have been loving a super simple combination of black and blue with small accents of roségold, such as my dainty necklace or the bi-color Omega Seamaster that is always on my wirst…

How to make black & blue work together:

  • keep it simple: most neutrals look great together, like white and beige, black and white, white and navy … and of course black and navy
  • similar but not the same: when I mix black and blue, I always like to either go really light on the blue (ie. the denim in my look) or really similar (navy blue + black) – but make sure that it is similar but not the same, meaning a blue that could also be mistaken for black.
  • skip the patterns: when mixing black and blue, I try not to add any patterns to the mix.
  • materials: instead of mixing patterns, I prefer to play with materials – but only in small doses. I purposely chose a super simple black turtleneck in a smooth knit under the navy blue coat, but like to mix in a touch of velvet in form of a bag or even a silk scarf tied to a black bag would also be great!

outfit details: EDITED long coat, MarcCain turtleneck (similar), Topshop bleached mom jeans, Prada boots, Miu Miu sunglasses, Aigner bag (also love this one by Prada), Omega watch

PS. anyone have any life hacks on how to get rid of all that fuzz on the coat after wearing a white sweater?! Tape won’t do it…

I also think blue and black looks great, depending on the situation and season! While I don’t know Mike’s suit, I totally agree with you – my boyfriend also has a dark blue suit that he used to wear a lot for work and during the summertime, it looks a lot better with brown shoes, whereas in wintertime it definitely looks better with black or very dark blue shoes.

Also ich finde auch, dass man Schwarz und Blau gut kombinieren kann, wenn man ein paar “Regeln” beachtet. Ich finde deinen Look super.
