fitness, but different …

As I promised last week, I will be posting about fitness at least once a week from now on. Not only is it what you guys seem to like to read, but it is also a weekly reminder for myself to stay active and healthy. And who can resist 2-in-1 deal? :) This week’s fitness post maybe a little different from the usual, but still something I really enjoy.

In June I tried bikram yoga for the first time. I have to say, it is one of the hardest things I have ever done!! I did it 4 times in one week and felt great after. However, it is very demanding physically as well as mentally and its not a workout I could do on a regular basis. Then in the summer, while I was interning in Venice Beach, I went to the YogaCo. in Santa Monica. I LOVED IT!!! Like many others, I used to always think yoga was only about meditating, breathing right and stretching … well trust me, when you wake up sore the next day, you know it has got to be about more than that :)

My favorite yoga classes are heated flow. The room isn’t as hot as with bikram yoga but still heated which gets you sweaty. Flow means that the poses are done in a continuous sequence “flowing” into each other, rather than holding a pose, releasing and starting a new pose. The main goal of flow yoga is to connect your breathing with your poses, making it into a dynamic movement.

Last night I tried a new yoga studio here in Vienna: Power-Yoga. It depends on what kind of yoga you enjoy, but if you like to feel your muscles working and build strength, then this is the place for you. I’ve only been to one class (balance & power 1-2, taught by Barbara – loved her!!) so my opinion thus far is solely based on that experience. Some of the poses were super hard and my muscles were literally shaking of exhaustion. My legs feel like jello-O right now but I’m loving it :) From now on I’ll try to incorporate yoga into my workouts at least once a week!

Do any of you practice yoga? Which are your favorite studios/classes?

I would love to do some yoga but it is hard to find a good studio around here!

I really love the idea of doing yoga but I’m not lithe at all so I’m a bit scared I’m not able to do the poses. xo

  5. Great post! I went to an Ashtanga Yoga class yesterday evening, which is, as you say, a much more dynamic form of yoga. Sore is one way of describing the state i’m in today! The class was an hour and a half, i’ll be honest after an hour I was ready to call it quits (trick is not to wear a watch, ha!), the class was much more cardivosacular than I was expecting, we moved through the poses quite quickly. But as achey as I am today I do wonder if i’d be disappointed with anything less now…

I did yoga about 5 years ago and yoga is really something great!
I should do it again, but in the mean time I’ve moved and here is also hard to find a good yoga-studio.

I started bikram yoga at the beginning of the year and loved it so much i got to the point where i was going 5 times a week and even took a challenge and did 4 classes in one day!

however, i’ve let it slip since i started full time work, but i’m going tonight, first time in what feels like forever!
