Expensive skincare – worth the splurge?

Expensive skincare – worth the splurge?

When it comes to my skincare, I don’t mess around. I know that I am lucky in the sense that neither during my teenage years nor now as an adult have I ever encountered any sort of acne or bad breakouts. BUT (you know it was coming, right?) due to my lifelong “battle” (sounds more dramatic than it really is) with eczema, my skin is hyper sensitive and super dry. If you have ever had to deal with any type of skin condition – and I think most of us have – you know that desperate times lead to desperate measures. Or in my case, a lot of money spent on dermatologists (I have yet to find a good one that I can trust…) and products to cure the cause.

Expensive skincare: worth the hype? | Bikinis & Passports

But back to not messing around with my skincare: Over the years, I have learned what my skin needs in order to be “ok”. The perks of dry skin are that pimples and impurities are almost none-existent, the downside is the constant battle with patchy and flaky skin that appears much older than it really is. That is why, to me, the right skincare is just as essential as my morning coffee.

Over the years, I have tried and tested a lot of different products and brands. Some work well, a few are real gems and others don’t do much for my skin. As someone who relies on honest reviews, I wanted to really (REALLY) test these products before sharing my opinion of them with you. That’s why most of these pretty little bottles and jars don’t hold much of the actual product anymore.

Beauty Talk: Is expensive skincare worth the hype?

  • Omorovicza Illuminating Moisturizer (115€ for 50ml): After trying a facial at the Park Hyatt Vienna that exclusively used the Omorovicza products, I started using the Illuminating Moisturizer and absolutely loved it. Especially during Summer. I went through 2 of the smaller bottles. The texture is not too heavy and with the Hungarian Thermal Water (Aqua) as a main ingredient it helps hydrate the skin for most of the day.
  • Creme de la Mer (272€ for 60ml): I tried and tested this cream for the past 3 months and have to say that it is my personal winner of the bunch. The price is insane, yes, but the cream really does wonders for dry skin. (I think it could easily be “too much” for anyone that does not have dry skin.) The consistency is super rich, which is why the instructions recommend warming the cream between your fingers before applying it to the skin to soften it a bit. Despite the richness, the Creme de la Mer never felt heavy and had me waking up with plump skin in the morning. Judging by the consistency, I think this will be my go-to product this Winter to save my skin from the icy winds and temperatures outside.
  • La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Sheer (395€ for 50ml): When it comes to expensive skincare, La Prairie is definitely amongst the top of the top with their Skin Caviar product range. I have used the Luxe Cream Sheer a lot in the past and can definitely not say anything bad about it. It is definitely one to love However, it also doesn’t do more than any of the other products I tested for my skin. It feels great and supplies a lot of moisture (even though I think the “sheer” might be too light for Winter for my personal needs). The typical La Prairie scent is lovely and the almost gel-like light texture feels calming on the skin.
  • La Solution 10 de Chanel (76€ for 30ml): This is the most recent addition to my collection of expensive skincare. In all fairness, I have only been using this for a good 10 days after running out of the Creme de la Mer. But I love it! A lot! The idea behind this cream is that it only features 10 ingredients in total. When it comes to skincare, I firmly believe in “less is more” and skipping any unnecessary perfumes or ingredients is the best approach if you are dealing with sensitive skin. It absorbs really quickly while still providing moisture. The pump disperser is very hygienic and the packaging beautifully simple – typical Chanel.
Fun Fact: This is the moisturizer that I will bring on my 3-week long trip to Australia in November, where it is currently Spring. From my personal judgement, La Solution 10 de Chanel will be a perfect product to use during the warmer months of the year, but during Winter I will need some additional care around my nose and eyes, where my skin is the driest.
  • Bobbi Brown Remedies No. 80 & 86 (44€ for 14ml): I am currently on my 3rd round of these remedies and 100% believe in this product. Not the cheapest serum (especially if you use a combination 2 or 3 of these) but some of the best I have ever come across. The remedies by Bobbi Brown provide targeted solutions for different skin issues, so you can mix and match the 6 different remedies depending on what your skin needs the most. In my case: Moisture and calming. In addition to the remedies, I use the Bobbi Brown Skin Salve balm around my nose, which acts as a “skin bandage,” enhancing skin’s own protective barrier and supporting its natural restorative process.
  • SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Serum (60€ for 30ml): When it comes to serums, this is my personal No.1 and has been for years. I have gone through 2 bottles and it is pure bliss on my skin. The oil free hydrating serum replenishes moisture and helps to restore radiance for a smoother complexion. No matter which moisturizer I use, this  (or the remedies) is always the first step after cleaning my skin.
  • SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier (79€ for 30 ml): Through a collaboration with SkinCeuticals, I was amongst the first to test the new H.A. Intensifier earlier this year (read the post here). In terms of comfort on the skin and consistency, I think it is very similar to the Hydrating B4 Serum (except for the color & a bit thicker). The main focus of this serum is to amplify the skin’s hyaluronic levels. It contains a high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid and helps improve the visible appearance of firmness, smoothness, and facial plumpness.
  • Chanel Huile de Jasmin (110€ for 50ml): I received this revitalizing facial oil as a present in September and have been using it about once per week as a more intense night treatment. Generally speaking, I am not a fan of oils because I always feel like they prevent my skin from breathing and make it itch. Not with the Huile de Jasmin. The formula smooths and comforts skin. It absorbs easily and gives the skin an instant glow, but the amount of moisture it supplies could be a bit more for my personal taste.

Conclusion: What might be my holy grail may be someone else’s worst nightmare, that’s why I find it hard to draw a general conclusion from my personal experience. What worked for me a year ago may not work again this Winter. Skin is such a personal issue and complex topic. If I don’t drink enough water one day, not even the most expensive moisturizer can fix my skin. Same goes for nutrition and the things I eat.

At the end of the day, however, I can not say anything bad about a single one of these products. They all work for me and have helped keep my skin and its dryness in check this past year. My favorites are the Remedies and both of the SkinCeuticals products. I feel like they instantly calm down my skin when it feels extra sensitive. I also feel like those are the best value for money and a great moisturizing base as a first step in your daily routine. In contrast, I think that the 400€ for the La Prairie cream is hard to justify. It is amazing and the ingredients are top notch, not doubt about it, but I feel like the price does not stand in relation to what it did for my skin. If you are younger, I can recommend the Aqua Marine Biology by La Prairie which I used years ago (scraped up my waitress paycheck to purchase it during college). The Creme de la Mer, however, is an absolute favorite of mine. It is definitely too heavy for you if you do not have dry or older skin, but in my case it is pure bliss. With Winter just around the corner, I know this will be a life savior for my skin. Last but not least, I don’t think I would re-purchase the Jasmin oil (the bottle I currently have will last me forever anyhow), but I do love La Solution 10 de Chanel and think this could potentially be my go-to cream for the warmer months of the year while La Mer won my heart for the cold season!

High end skin care is absolutely worth the splurge in my book. I do wince a bit as I’m paying but I find the products last longer and the results are noticeable. I’ve just bought the Charlotte Tilbury night ream and it is absolutely gorgeous. My skin looks and feels plumper and younger since I’ve been using it.

    Liebe Vicky,

I love their stuff!

Jedem bleibt natürlich selbst überlassen für was er Geld ausgeben will.
    Viel Spaß in Australien 🏄🏻‍♀️

A little too pricey for me. But if it helps and you have the money, why not? 🙂

  • briella p

I’ve spent upwards of $250 in the past on brand such as La Mer and Sisley, and I feel like my skin responds even better to the Somaluxe Rapid Line Filler. Its a fraction of the price ($24). I was skeptical of this product at first; mostly because of its bold claims surrounding hydration and cell growth.

But so far I’m pleasantly surprised – especially in regards to my skin’s moisture level throughout the day. Previous moisturizers left my face a bit dry after applying makeup, but this is the first product that has truly improved the texture and tone of my skin overall, as well as helped it retain a feeling of elasticity from morning until night.
