travel companion #1: le pliage

Ok, so I couldn’t help myself. While I am supposed to be studying, my mind keeps drifting. So here we go…

Not only should you make wise decisions on who you travel with, but also WHAT you travel with. To me, a perfect travel companion has to be two things; practical and nice looking. I know the second of the two is a bit „shallow“ but I absolutely looove things that make a statement.
Recently I have become a huge fan of the ,Le Pliage Bag’ by Longchamp. I gave one of my best friends one for her birthday and couldn’t resist treating myself to one as well. She opted for the brighter, more seasonal pink while I went with the basic white, which to me stands out just as much. I adore the fact that the bag is partly made of genuine leather and the details are in gold. To me this adds just the right amount of glamour. Enough to pass with a dress and cocktails but not too much to fill it with sunscreen and a good book and bring to the beach.

These bags aren’t only perfect because they are simple in color and design and will go with basically every outfit imaginable BUT they are also made to fold up smaller than a bra or t-shirt.
folds up really small :)
The plan for our next trip is to drag our big oversize purses on the airplane to ensure enough room for magazines, iPods, cameras, snacks,… and to pack the ,Le Pliage’ for shopping trips or dinner dates. This way we wont need to waste valuable space in our suitcases and can still have multiple purses on our trip.
For fall and winter I am thinking of getting a color which is a little less vibrant than a super clean white or flowery pink. Right now my favorite contestants are the beige or black. Considering I already own multiple black purses, I will most likely go with the beige to add to my color spectrum a bit. If I can’t decide by then, I might just have to make my own, which is also an option online.

Go to Longchamp to see all the other colors and sizes available or to create your very own design.
If you do end up with a lighter color, don’t be afraid of using it daily just so it wont get dirty. At the place I got mine, I was told to just gently clean the fabric part with a little warm water and ox gall (bile) soap. I chose to prepare myself and already went ahead and got some. As soon as I have had first cleaning experiences I will be sure to share the results with you.

As much as I love being in Vienna, it is also a place for school and work to take over my daily routine. For the past week my days have consisted of getting up, having breakfast, studying non-stop, going to work around 5pm and getting home around 2am. Sadly it doesn’t really leave any time for posts about wonderful places.
I promise I’ll have my life back after Tuesday when all my finals are done and over!! Lots of updates are to follow, keep tuned.
‘Til then, have a fantastic weekend and make sure to check-out my bestest (confessions of a health-a-holic) and her tips and tricks on how to look slammin’ in time for summer! (She really is a genius in terms of keeping your body healthy and looking fiiine)

mind the gap…

Summer of 2008 was filled with lots of traveling for me. 3 friends from California visited Europe for about 5 weeks and we tried to fit in as many different countries as possible, without rushing too much. Right before the trip to Rome, mentioned here, we stayed in London for 3 days. My brother and another friend joined in on all the fun. Since trying to budget we decided to go with a hostel. I have to say, we could not have been happier with our pick.
After lots of research online we finally decided on Clink Hostel. Its an old court house and has a great flaire to it. The rooms are in the old prisoner cells and the internet lounge and movie room are in old court rooms. Very cool!

Located only 5 minutes from Kings Cross Station we were able to reach everything by metro or foot. If you go by metro, make sure you get a hold of an oyster card. We found it wasn’t all that cheap to use the metro, but definitely a great way to get around. And after all, a famous london-metro picture is a MUST.

One of the things I loved the most during our stay was the free walking tour. Luckily our hostel was a meeting spot for the walking tours around London, otherwise we probably wouldn’t have heard about it. The concept behind it seems simple enough, none the less we were all very impressed. You meet at a certain spot, get divided up by languages (if there are enough of you they’ll even do a spanish or german group) and then you walk around London. Our tour lasted about 3 hours and we pretty much saw everything. The tour-guide was in his early twenties, history major and very passionate about everything he talked about. He also had funny stories to tell or songs to sing while we walked around. After the tour he asks for tips, reflecting how much you liked it and were happy with him. We were all students at the time, so we gave about 5 pounds each. I saw older couples or families give anything between 5 and 30 pounds. I have to say, it was the best 5 pounds spent the entire trip.
The free walking tours are also offered in other cities (my friends did one in Paris and really liked it as well) and you can find all the details here.
During our stay, we also had the chance to see a concert at the O2 Arena. If you have time and there is an artist of your interest in town you cant go wrong by getting tickets. The arena is the most impressive I have ever seen by far!!

London is an exciting place to visit and a sure must if you have an appreciation for worldly but unique cities.
No matter what your interests are, fashion, food, sightseeing, british accents,… you’ll find something to do in London and will leave with amazing new experiences and memories.

travel help #1: high voltage

When traveling to foreign countries make sure you get all the facts straight BEFORE going on your trip. This will save you money, time and unnecessary trouble.
*
An issue, that is easily forgotten about, is outlets and voltage.
If you are going from North America to Europe, make sure you keep the 220 volts in mind. Girls: do NOT use a hair straightener, curling iron, hair dryer,… without a converter. It will blow faster than you can curl your first curl. A simple adapter-plug wont do the trick.
As far as cellphone chargers, plugs for laptops and such go, you will usually be fine with just an adapter plug because the power supply unit of your electrical devices will do the job for you.
An easy way to check if you can go without using an actual power converter/transformer (which weighs a ton and isn’t cheap), is to just look directly on the plug.
i.e. My camera charger says “input: ca. 100V-240V 50/60Hz 4-7VA” in tiny writing on the bottom.

This set is great because you’ll be set for any country you visit.
It’ll cost you about 8-10$ and is a great investment if you travel a lot.
You can get the pictured set here.
